After a death in Ireland

How to tell Revenue about a death

What Revenue needs when someone dies, how to contact them, and what happens next.

How to tell them

Post a letter to the deceased's Revenue office, or paste the text into MyEnquiries if you have a Revenue account. Revenue expects to hear from the executor or administrator.

Send in the executor's name where possible.

They will ask for the PPS number of the person who died.

Step by step

  1. Post a letter to the deceased's Revenue office, or paste the text into MyEnquiries if you have a Revenue account.
  2. Revenue notes who the personal representative is and sends any correspondence to them.
  3. If Revenue asks for a return or raises a liability, the personal representative or solicitor deals with it.
  4. Ask about any refund due to the estate.
