For credit unions

Your credit union already looks after the member. LegacySteps helps look after their family.

When a member dies, the family is left dealing with banks, insurers, pension providers, Revenue, the utilities and a great deal of paperwork, at the worst possible time. LegacySteps lets your credit union offer that family a complete bereavement aftercare service, under your own name, without building or administering anything.

Nothing to set up. No subscription. €40 per family, including VAT, and nothing is ever charged to the family. A member of your family has died? Go to the family page.

Two people holding hands

How it works

One simple action by your staff. Everything else is handled by LegacySteps. The family comes to you to tell you a member has died. From that moment, three steps.

1

You invite the family

Your staff type the family member’s name and email into the set-up card, which takes about fifteen seconds, or hand them your credit union’s LegacySteps number to enter at legacysteps.ie/families. Either way the invitation goes out in your credit union’s name, with your logo. No member data is passed to us, and nothing is sent to anyone who has not asked for it.

2

The family gets one place, from you

The invitation opens with one tap and needs no password. The family answers a few plain questions once. The letters to every organisation are written in their name and sent in one go; replies come back into their account; anyone who does not reply is reminded weekly; and when an organisation needs a certified certificate or its own form, the family is told exactly what to send.

3

You see progress, not private affairs

Your screen shows each family you invited: invited, opened, letters sent, replies in. You never see the family’s correspondence or the figures from the estate. If a family would rather not use it, nothing happens and nothing is charged.

What your staff do, in full

Type the family member’s name and email address into the set-up card and press send, or hand the family a card with your credit union’s LegacySteps number. That is the whole job: about fifteen seconds. No forms to process, no documents to collect, no follow-up to chase, no training programme. Your staff never handle the family’s correspondence; it goes directly between the family and each organisation.

The questions a family does not know to ask

Most families have no idea what the credit union may hold for them: a nomination, Death Benefit Insurance, Life Savings Insurance, Loan Protection. The family’s letter to your credit union asks those four questions, along with the balance at the date of death, so the benefits you provide are claimed rather than missed. Your credit union confirms what applies and handles the claim, as it does now; LegacySteps only makes sure the question is asked.

Families also get a plain guide, in your name, to credit union savings and loans after a death, alongside guides to what to do when someone dies, help with the cost of the funeral and social welfare after a death.

What the family receives

ToldAIB, 3 Oct
RepliedRevenue, 9 Oct
WaitingIrish Life
  • One list of everyone who needs to be told: banks, credit unions, An Post, pension providers, insurers, the utilities and phone companies, Revenue and Social Protection, with the letter for each already written.
  • Told, replied or still waiting against each organisation, with weekly reminders to any that have not replied.
  • A plain explanation whenever an organisation asks for its own form, a certified death certificate or proof of identity, with the covering letter to send.
  • Help preparing an Additional Needs Payment application where money for the funeral is short, and a weekly follow-up with the Community Welfare Service with the family’s authority. The Department decides the application.
  • An estate summary of the balances organisations report, for the solicitor or the probate application.
  • Free to the family. Nothing is ever charged to them, and their information is never sold.

What your credit union gets

  • Something real to offer a bereaved member’s family, beyond a sympathy card and a leaflet.
  • Your name and logo on every screen the family sees. LegacySteps stays in the background.
  • Your own benefits asked about in every case, so nominations, death benefit, life savings cover and loan protection are claimed by the people entitled to them.
  • A screen showing each family’s progress, without exposing their private affairs.
  • No member data transferred to us. The family is invited by you and chooses to take part.
  • €40 per family activated, including VAT, invoiced monthly. Nothing else, ever.

"When my parent died it took me the best part of a year to sort the paperwork. The hardest part was not any one letter. It was keeping track of who I had told, who had come back, and who was still waiting. I built LegacySteps so that no other family has to hold all of that in their head."

Data protection, in plain terms

A credit union is a regulated institution and will want to know exactly how this works before putting its name on it. These are the answers.

No member data leaves you

You give us the family member’s name and email address for the invitation, or nothing at all if you hand them your number. Beyond the member’s name and date of death, nothing about the member, their accounts or their benefits is passed to us. The family gives the rest themselves, reads the terms and agrees to them on their own screen.

Who is responsible for what

When your staff enter the family member’s contact details and send the invitation, your credit union is the data controller and LegacySteps processes those details on your behalf under a written data processing agreement. From the moment the family opens the case and accepts the terms, Alderidge Fusion Limited is the data controller for the case and everything in it; your credit union remains the controller for its own records. The data processing agreement, retention schedule and list of sub-processors are available for your compliance officer before you decide.

Stored in Ireland, seen only by those who need to

The case is stored on servers in the EU (Ireland region). The family sees its own case; your staff see progress, never correspondence or figures; nobody else sees anything. Details are deleted six months after a case is closed, or sooner on request.

Questions

Does LegacySteps decide what benefits the family is entitled to?

No. The family’s letter asks your credit union whether a nomination, Death Benefit Insurance, Life Savings Insurance or Loan Protection applies. Your credit union and its insurer decide entitlement and handle the claim, exactly as now.

Can LegacySteps have the funeral paid from the member’s account or benefit?

With the family’s agreement, the letter asks your credit union to settle the funeral director’s invoice from the account or the death benefit, with the invoice and the death certificate attached. Whether and how that is done remains your credit union’s decision under its own procedures.

How much work is it for our staff?

Fifteen seconds per family to type a name and an email address, or none at all if you give the family your number. There is no training programme and nothing to install.

What does it cost?

€40 per family activated, including VAT, invoiced monthly to the credit union. No set-up fee, no subscription, no minimum, no contract term. A family who never opens their invitation is not charged. Nothing is ever charged to the family.

Does the family have to be a member?

No. The family member who deals with the paperwork is often not the member; the invitation goes to whoever is handling things.

Does it replace a solicitor?

No. LegacySteps handles notifications and the paperwork around them. Wills, probate and the estate itself remain matters for a solicitor.

Who is behind it?

LegacySteps was built in Ireland by Derek Fitzgerald after going through the process himself for a parent. It is offered to families through funeral directors and credit unions, and only through them.
