After a death in Ireland

How to tell AIB about a death

What AIB needs when someone dies, how to contact them, and what happens next.

How to tell them

Send a letter by email to AIB's bereavement team, or fill in their online Notification of Customer's Death form. Either way AIB will search for all accounts and block sole accounts. They will ask later for the original or a certified copy of the death certificate.

Phone line open Monday to Friday, 9 to 5.

Step by step

  1. Either send a letter by email to bereavement.support@aib.ie, or open AIB's online Notification of Customer's Death form and copy the details across.
  2. AIB searches for every account and product in the name and blocks sole accounts. Joint accounts stay open for the survivor.
  3. AIB writes to you (or the solicitor) asking for the original or a certified copy of the death certificate and setting out how balances can be released. Under €25,000 needs their indemnity form; above needs a Grant of Probate.
