After a death in Ireland

How to tell Bank of Ireland about a death

What Bank of Ireland needs when someone dies, how to contact them, and what happens next.

How to tell them

Send a letter by email to the Bereavement Support Unit, or phone them. They need only the four core details to start. Certified proof of death is needed later, and their forms BSU_3.1 and BSU_4.1 come into play when money is released.

Phone lines open Monday to Friday, 9.30 to 4.30. A certified proof of death is needed later.

Step by step

  1. Send a letter by email to bereavement.support@boi.com, or phone the Bereavement Support Unit (Mon to Fri 9.30 to 4.30), or bring it to a branch.
  2. They need only the four core details to start. Sole accounts are blocked and debit cards cancelled; joint accounts stay open for the survivor.
  3. They write with what they need: certified proof of death, then their release forms (BSU_3.1, BSU_4.1). Under €35,000 can be released on their indemnity form; above needs a Grant of Probate.
