After a death in Ireland

How to tell An Post Money about a death

What An Post Money needs when someone dies, how to contact them, and what happens next.

How to tell them

Bring a letter to a post office or contact An Post Money. Confirm the process by phone first.

Phone them first; they will tell you what they need.

Step by step

  1. Have ready the four details every bank needs (name, address, date of birth, date of death).
  2. Phone the bereavement line with the details in front of you, or write to them.
  3. They freeze sole accounts and write to you with what they need next: usually a certified copy of the death certificate, your photo ID, and for larger balances a Grant of Probate.
